Week 2 overview

Wow, week two seemed harder!  That being said, i can already feel myself getting stronger and getting some of my cardio back.

Monday I did Core Synergistics, jogged at lunch, and then kickboxing at the Y.
Tuesday I did the Cardio X dvd and then went for a swim when I got home.
Wednesday I did the arms and shoulders DVD before work, jogged at lunch, did a 60 min group cycle class (for my tri bike workout) and then didAb ripper X.  A bit much for one day!  Felt good anyways, and its alwas fun to take classes at the Y with friends.
Thursday i did Yoga X and then relaxed after work.
Friday was another crazy day.  I did the legs and back dvd before wrok, did another group cycle class after work, and then AB Ripper X before bed.
Saturday i did the turbokick class at the Y instead of P90X kenpo - its basically the same thing, but i could tell when I got up that i wouldn't work as hard at home because i was so tired and sore.  For some reason, group classes make me work harder.  After the class, i saw a half-mile.

Today, i feel a bit like i got hit by a mac truck.  Yikes.  Enjoyed my day off at my cousin's grad party and just relaxing.  Get to start all over again tomorrrow.  :) Bring it.

Remainder of Week 1

Wow....long week!  Well Thursday i did the P90X Yoga workout, which consists of 90 minutes of some serious yoga.  Its not the nice happy stretching yoga...no..its mostly sunsalutations, with some balancing poses and core work to round it out.  I also wek on a nie bike ride after all the crazy storms finished up in area.

Friday I did the P90X legs and back routine.  OUCH OUCH OUCH.  seriously ouch.  Ok, no more complaining.  The pull up bar I bought didn't fit in my doorway, so i used the resistance bands for the pull ups and chin ups.  I am really glad they show you these moves in the dvd with both the bar and the bands.  I tried to start the Ab RipperX (p90x's ab workout) afterwords but couldn't pull it off.  That dvd actually uses the legs a bit too and mine were fried.  I ended up doing stuff around the house and then doing Ab Ripper X right before bed.

Saturday I woke up early to do Kenpo. I was REALLY sore, but luckily this mostly a cardio routine and after i got the leggs warmed up they didn't hurt too much. Althoguh i did kickboxing (and thus can skip Kenpo) I decided to do it anyway...mainly to see what it is about.  Its a good workout, but i actually thinking kicking and punching the heavy bag at the Y is a better workout.  After that, Andy and I went down to Cannon Falls and kayaked the Cannon river with some friends.  It was a blast.  The instant we got in we got drenched from some awesome rapids.  The rest of the ride was smooth but still a good time.  Once we got to Welch, we exited the river, through our kayaks on our friend's truck (who had our bikes in the back), grabbed our bikes and headed back to Cannon Falls on the Cannon Valley bike trail.  What a day!  Got three good workouts and had a blast with some great people.  After we got home we visited with the neighbors and then watched movies on the couch.

So today is my rest day, and I took advantage of that.  Its gorgeous outside....but I mostly worked on cleaning up the house and finishing up some projects.  For P90X on Sundays you can choose to rest or do a stretching DVD....I chose to rest my sore body and use the spare time to fold laundry  :)    Back at it tomorrow!

Day 3

Ouch!  I am a bit sore from my earlier workouts this week....but still going strong (yep, its only day 3).  Today I worked out with my trainer at the Y before work for a half hour doing a bunch of lower body and some upper body stuff i can do at home with my kettlebells and bands and then i went to work.  At lunch i did a 35 minute walk/jog combo (almost to straight jogging, yay!) with a friend from work.  And to top that all off, I did the P90X shoulders and arms workout followed by P90X Ab ripper X (ouch ouch ouch).  The arms and shoulders dvd was really good....but i went to light on the weights.  I will kick it up a notch next time.  I didn't do the "bonus" round...but i will get there eventually.  Overall I am feeling pretty good about my start.  I still need to swim once and bike twice this week in addition to my other P90X workouts, but I will fit it all in.   I Also had the best (really healthy)  dinner...not that i plan to blog about food but i want to remember this one :)  I made a stir fry with salmon, garlic, pam high heat cooking spray, tofu shiratake noodles, mushrooms, broccoli, and Lotus stir fry sauce.   Followed it up with blueberries and raspberries.   YUM.   Had a great day!

p90X Days 1 and 2 and tri training - Bring it!

So i am mainly blogging on this for accountability and so that i can look back in 90 days and see what i did, what hurt, what worked, etc.  If anyone reads this, HI!! If not, that's cool too   :) If you are interested in knowing more about the workouts and reading a review of this program, WebMD did a review of it, which is available at the following web address:  http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/features/the-p90x-system?ecd=wnl_fit_061810

Here are my "ground rules":  1)  I will follow the YWCA's training program with one exception - if i want, i can substitute one swim a week with an hour of kayaking, and 2) I can substitute P90X's "Kenpo" workout (basically cardio kickboxing) with the kickboxing (on the heavy bag) class at the New Hope YMCA.  Other than that, i will follow the YWCA training plan and P90X to the letter.

Ok, so I finally started p90X yesterday.  I love it.  (as much as one can love an exercise routine.)   I am doing the p90X lean version, which is still the real deal, but less emphasis on upper body strength, more cardio.  Still a lot of sweaty work.  I decided the classic version would have been a bit much this early after being on crutches, mainly because of the Plyometrics workouts (all jumping. Not a good idea yet).  The lean version switches the 60 minute plyo video with a cardio video consisting of a mix of core with some plyo, yoga, and kenpo (liek tea bo) and core moves.  Otherwise I think its about the same. 8 different P90X workouts (including two short ax workouts) a week and an additional 6 workouts a week for my triathlon training (run bike and swim) should whip me right back into shape (or kill me....not sure which yet!)

Yesterday I did the Core Synergistics workout which i really liked.  I also jogged/walked (still switching off thanks to rehabing the fooot/ankle) for 30 minutes.  After work I went to the Y and did the AWESOME Kickboxing class with a friend from work and stayed for the short Core workout afterwords.  Ouch.  A lot in one day.  Everything went pretty well expect my stomach was not happy with the core routine and I get winded too quickly.  Can't wait to get my cardio conditioning back in order.

Today was much easier.  I did the P90X Cardio DVD I mentioned above, which is still a workout but not too bad.  I love the Kenpo moves and enjoyed doing some yoga again.  The Plyo movses are killer...but i suppose thats good.  (Bring IT! as Tony the trainer says...alll the time....).  I also swam across the lake and back with Andy kayaking next to me on one side and the Baby dog swimming on the other.  (My dog swims faster than me! Yikes!).  It was a bit cold but I loved it. Nothing feels better than weightlessly gliding through the water with two of the most important living things in my life.

My only complaint about the dvds are that Tony Horton calls his other workout people (and the viewer) "boys and girls" or "kids" a lot.  Kinda annoying.  However, I like him.  I think he will get old, but he is upbeat and good at explaining stuff.  I also like his motto of "do your best and forget the rest."  A good motto for all of our struggles in life.
